Nutrition and Health
Volume 69, Program 3

What does eating your vegetables have to do with homeschooling a high schooler? Find the connection on today's "Home School Heartbeat," with Home School Legal Defense Association President Mike Smith.
Mike Smith: Homeschooling through high school means keeping an eye on your child's practical skills, not just his academic progress. After all, you're training a future adult. So why not include nutrition and health in your child's course of study? That's important not just so your child can be healthy now, but so that he can live a healthy lifestyle once he leaves home--and maybe even keep off the "freshman 15 pounds" associated with the first year of college!
The study of nutrition can relate to a variety of other subjects, including biology, chemistry, and home economics. Your child should learn which foods and food combinations will promote good health and which ones to avoid. Teach your teens some simple, nutritious recipes that will be easy to prepare when he or she has left home and may be eating on the run.
Have your children design and execute an exercise program that will be easy for them to continue while in college and beyond. This may include learning a sport or pursuing an activity such as hiking or bike riding.
High school is also a good time to learn the skills that can save a life. Consider having your teen take a CPR, EMT, lifesaving, or a babysitting course. Along with the particular training involved, your child will learn first aid techniques. Some summer jobs require these skills, giving a boost to your child's work experience.
And until next time, I'm Mike Smith.
