The Homeschool Advantage
Volume 68, Program 33
7/26/2006
Will homeschooling prepare my child to go to college and get a job? Join us today on "Home School Heartbeat," as Mike Farris and his guest provide answers to those questions.
Michael Farris: I'm here today with Abby Pilgrim, who is a homeschool graduate and who's now settling into her job as a production coordinator for National Geographic in Washington, D.C. Abby, what was your experience with homeschooling?
Abby Pilgrim: I was homeschooled pretty much all the way from elementary school all the way up through high school. I have four sisters, and my dad was in the military, so we moved around pretty often. And so homeschooling was awesome--I loved it as a kid. It just made moving a whole lot easier, I loved getting to hang out with my sisters--who are still my best friends--and really also felt like I got an amazing education. We did A Beka but then also just supplemented with a lot of other things, so I feel like I had great preparation for where I am now.
Mike: How do you think homeschooling prepared you for college?
Abby: Probably the biggest thing that homeschooling does is it gives you the ability to focus on what's important and also good time management skills. I feel like being homeschooled--there's the incentive of when you get your work done, you can move on to the next thing whether it's playing outside or doing whatever activity comes up next. And that really pays off in school when you have a big load--that ability to be efficient and get things done.
Mike: Thanks so much, Abby. I'm Mike Farris.
